In 1961 Joseph Heller published his satirical WWII novel Catch 22. Using non-chronological third-person omniscient narration, Heller described events from the points of view of different characters out of sequence.
The title of the book refers to a fictional bureaucratic stipulation that embodies illogical and immoral reasoning.

In 1970 the movie Catch 22, starring Alan Arkin, was released.
I don’t think the Wikipedia “review” caught the essence of the novel. While not an existentialist, Heller creates Yossarian, an individual in conflict with and overwhelmed by society (the Army), and who realizes his struggle is futile. In the end of a truly hilarious novel, Yossarian realizes his only option is to desert, or he will surely die like so many of his comrades. I don’t think there is a better anti-war novel.
