In the 1962 Alabama Democratic primary, George Wallace finished first, taking 35 percent of the vote. In the runoff election he won the nomination with 55 percent of the vote. With no Republican filed to run, Wallace won a crushing victory in the November general election with 96 percent of the vote.
Wallace unsuccessfully sought the United States presidency as a Democrat three times, and once as an American Independent Party candidate.
