The Japanese aircraft carriers Hiryu and Shokaku were launched in 1939.

These two carriers, along with four others (Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Zuikaku) carried 420 planes and were escorted by  two battleships, two heavy cruisers, one light cruiser, eleven destroyers, eight tankers and twenty-three submarines to the attack on Pearl Harbor.
