    Excerpt from my upcoming novel:

    At noon, Nick and SGT Miller huddled around a small fire eating cans of frozen beans and vegetable stew mixed with ice crystals. Thud! A pressurized heat wave swept across their bodies. Wham! The explosion of a nearby mortar shell was followed by the strange, buzzing sound of shrapnel fragments swarming like bees through the air.
