Once regarded as the highest discipline of the Samurai warrior, archery eventually lost its value as a weapon of war and evolved into Kyūdō, the “Way of the Bow.” Eugen Herrigel described his experience with the highly refined contemplative practice of Kyūdō in the 1930s in his book Zen in the Art of Archery.
