The Maltese Falcon, a 1941 film noir based on a novel by Dashiell Hammett is considered by many as one of the all-time great films. Directed by John Huston, it starred Humphrey Bogart as the private investigator Sam Spade and Mary Astor as his “femme fatale” client.

I am curious about what this film has to say about the time in which it was created. Why was it such a hit?
Roger Ebert: “Some film histories consider The Maltese Falcon the first film noir. It put down the foundations for that native American genre of mean streets, knife-edged heroes, dark shadows and tough dames.”
