In 1947 British India was divided into the independent sovereign states of India and Pakistan. From 1947 to 1956 Pakistan was a monarchy within the United Kingdom and the other Dominions in the British Commonwealth of Nations.

With the adoption of a republican constitution in 1956, Pakistan abolished the monarchy and became a republic within the Commonwealth of Nations.
