Shirley Temple first appeared in film at age four in Baby Burlesks and became a star at the age of six with her movie Bright Eyes. The image of a wholesome child proved extremely popular with many Americans who bought Shirley Temple dolls, dishes, and clothing. When she reached adolescence, the child star novelty faded and she retired completely from films in 1950.
In the 1970s, she was appointed ambassador to Ghana & Czechoslovakia. She was also one of the first celebrities to speak out about her breast cancer.
