Hal James bought the 1st TV in our neighborhood in 1951. It was a huge wooden box 3-4 feet wide with a 12″ screen. He plugged it in, shifted the antenna and on came the station call letters and that annoying hum. Mike and I sat there for hours waiting for the evening shows to begin. It was magic.
In 1949, we got our first TV in Kansas City – one station WDAF – I mostly remember the test pattern (on most of the time) with an Indian chief in full headdress atop symmetrical geometric designs
I remember hating Howdy Doody but loving Smilin’Ed’s Gang on Saturdays.
Midnight the cat thought everything Ed said was “Nice”, and while Squeeky the mouse hadn’t mastered any English words, he approved of Ed’s comments with his Eeky-Squeeky replies.
The only prime time show from ’51 that I can recall is “I Remember Mama”.
